FIFTH AVE CINEMA
5th Ave Cinema—Oregon's only student-run cinema—wanted their materials redesigned to attract more young people, especially Portland State University students. Since 35mm film is a dying art form and due to the abundance of commercial movie theaters, not only was 5th Ave challenged to preserve the long, valued tradition, but they also had to make sure they appeal to millennials. My job was to redesign the film newsletter/guide to look fresh, contemporary yet still feel somewhat old-fashioned, in a good way. The guide also needed to be easy to produce with a small budget. By changing the format, giving it a simple layout and using black and white photos, the film guide now better reflects the cinema's values and development over the years, since the opening in 1989.
